PRINCE at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Surprise, surprise: Prince plays two intimate late-night shows at the Métropolis!

What luck-right at the very last minute, the brilliant and unpredictable Prince asked if he could perform two late-night shows during the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. The Festival had a one-word answer: YES! This incredible performer, last with us 10 years ago, had visited Métropolis and liked the venue. This time, he’s happy to deliver two out-of-the-blue impromptu shows, June 24 and 25 at 11:30 p.m., at the Métropolis. A complete and multi-talented artist, his every concert only enhances his legendary stature. The performances are even more exciting because of the intimacy of the venue: a capacity of 2000, for a performer more accustomed to playing arenas 10 times that size! Better yet, the star has asked us to transform the venue into a massive dance floor for the occasion. Therefore, the parterre will be reserved for dancing, with only 300 reserved seats in the balcony. Tickets for these surprise concerts go on sale tomorrow, Tuesday, June 14, at noon.

Tickets will be available from L’Astral (Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, 305, Ste. Catherine Street W.), from Métropolis (59 Ste. Catherine St. E.), or from Admission and Ticketmaster (admission.com and ticketmaster.com, 1 855 790‑1245).

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal will run from June 25 to July 4, 2011.

Same-Sex Couples Protest Harms of Marriage Inequality at Local Post Offices Across the Nation

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

WASHINGTON–As millions of Americans file their income taxes, hundreds of LGBT Americans will participate in National Tax Day Protests on April 15, and on April 18. These protests are being organized to call attention to tax inequities facing same-sex couples as a result of the state and federal laws that deny civil marriage protections to same-sex couples. These actions highlight the ongoing moral and financial costs of marriage discrimination—as well as the consequences paid by all Americans as a result of these unequal state and federal laws. In addition to on-the-ground actions organized by Marriage Equality USA and GetEQUAL, a campaign called “Refuse To Lie” has been launched to challenge the IRS’ requirement that gay married couples file as single.

“We are encouraged by the recent successful legal challenges to Section 3 surrounding the so-called ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ (DOMA) and the introduction of the ‘Respect for Marriage Act’ in Congress. However, same-sex couples are sitting down at their dining room tables to figure out how to file their taxes as ‘single’ in good conscience – despite spending decades together,” said Molly McKayMarriage Equality USA Media Director. “Even in the six states in which marriage equality is the law of the land, the IRS does not allow same-sex couples to file as married, despite having a valid marriage license.”

“The IRS is awkwardly trying to recognize community property law for same-sex couples while not recognizing the rest of our relationships, resulting in mass confusion and more expensive tax preparation costs. Even Turbo Tax has thrown up their hands and confirmed they can’t figure out how to create software that can comply with the disparity in how the government treats same-sex couples,” said GetEQUAL Director Robin McGehee. “This is a ridiculous way to treat law-abiding Americans who simply want to share their lives together, file their taxes together, and be recognized as full citizens of this country.”

“More people are refusing to lie on those forms, even though the government is telling them to,” said Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, who plans on filing as married with her wife, Andrea. “It would be both dishonest and deeply humiliating to now disavow each other or our marriage and declare ourselves single on our tax form.”

The awkward situation created by this disparity between federal law, state law, and tax code has been covered at the national level. The New York Timesreported Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, as saying, “As a lawyer and a legal advocate for the L.G.B.T. community, I am often in a position to advise people to exercise great caution and to comply in most cases with the letter of the law, even when that means denying who we are. This is my small way of saying, where we can, we are not going to play the game anymore.

Refuse to Lie is a grassroots campaign that aims to make visible the impossible choice gay married couples have in choosing between the truth and the law. In addition to highlighting this injustice, the Refuse to Lie campaign provides resources on what other couples might face if they to “refuse to lie” on their tax returns. The campaign also provides an opportunity for individuals and gay or straight married couples to sign a petition and stand in solidarity with those who are risking their freedom to demand their equality.

NYC & COMPANY AND HERITAGE OF PRIDE ANNOUNCE THEME OF THIS YEAR’S NYC PRIDE CELEBRATION: “PROUD AND POWERFUL”

NYC & Company, the official marketing, tourism and partnership organization for the City of New York,  joined with Heritage of Pride, Inc., to unveil the theme of the City’s annual gay pride celebration. The theme for 2011, “Proud and Powerful,” will spotlight New York City as one of the world’s most popular LGBT destinations. The City will host eight days of activities, beginning with The Rally at Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield on Saturday, June 18, and culminating in the legendary Dance on the Pier at Pier 54 in Hudson River Park on Sunday, June 26.

“We are proud that New York City has become one of the most popular destinations to celebrate LGBT pride,” said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company. “We invite visitors from around the world to book their travel now to take part in our vibrant and unique pride celebration.”

Heritage of Pride, which organizes LGBT events in New York City to commemorate and celebrate the 1969 Stonewall Riots, will present a week-long roster of activities that will showcase the City as a LGBT destination.  More than 1 million expected to attend  New York City pride events, from June 18 to the 26.

“Our theme for 2011, Proud and Powerful, exemplifies where the LGBT movement is now,” said Chris Frederick, managing director of Heritage of Pride, Inc. “Over the past year we’ve seen the downfall of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the slow breakdown of the Defense of Marriage Act, and many other wins for the community. Our message is clear and succinct: we are proud of who we are and increasingly more powerful in winning LGBT equal rights.”
