<![CDATA[The Beach Boys Celebrating The Band's 50th Anniversary ]]>Mon, 26 Aug 2013 02:20:00 GMThttp://pinkmag.com/20/post/2013/08/the-beach-boys-celebrating-the-bands-50th-anniversary.html
MADE IN CALIFORNIA’ TO BE RELEASED AUGUST 27 BY CAPITOL/UMe

The Beach Boys have opened their archives for a new career-spanning, six-CD collection titled Made In California, capping the legendary band’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. To be released worldwide on August 27 by Capitol/UMe, Made In California features more than seven and a half hours of music, including more than 60 previously unreleased tracks. The deluxe set is presented in a high school annual-inspired hardbound book with personal recollections from the band’s members, replicated classic artwork and memorabilia, photos from the band’s archive, and handwritten yearbook-style inscriptions from Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks.

Produced by The Beach Boys and The SMiLE Sessions’ GRAMMY® Award-winning team of Mark Linett, Alan Boyd, and Dennis Wolfe, Made In California chronologically charts the 50-year career of America’s Band, from their earliest demos to their most recent recordings. With huge hits and rare gems including never-before-released original songs, home demos, alternate takes and mixes, and live concert, television and radio performances, the set showcases the breadth and diversity of The Beach Boys’ recorded catalog and illustrates the band’s unique and evocative West Coast story. From “Surfin’ Safari” to “God Only Knows,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Good Vibrations” to “Kokomo,” The Beach Boys’ canon boasts a masterful versatility that is unparalleled in American popular music.

Made In California’s memorabilia includes Brian Wilson’s 1959 high school essay titled “My Philosophy,” which is reproduced in the collection’s book in its original handwritten form (the original is currently on display in The GRAMMY Museum’s yearlong Beach Boys exhibit celebrating the band’s 50-year career). In the essay, Wilson expresses his wish for a satisfying life, writing, “I don’t want to settle for a mediocre life, but make a name for myself in my life’s work, which I hope will be music.”

Made In California’s previously unreleased and long sought-after recordings include “Goin’ To The Beach,” “California Feelin’,” “Soul Searchin’,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” and “You’re Still A Mystery,” among others. The set also debuts 17 unreleased live recordings, including “Runaway” (1965), “Friends” and “Little Bird” (1968), “Wild Honey” (1972), “It’s About Time” (1973), “Wonderful” and “Vegetables” from The Beach Boys’ legendary 1993 acoustic tour, and a 1995 rendition of “Sail On, Sailor” featuring a soulful lead vocal by the late Carl Wilson. The greatly missed talents of Carl and Dennis Wilson are also celebrated with rare and previously unreleased recordings including Dennis’ “(Wouldn’t It Be Nice To) Live Again,” “Barnyard Blues” and “My Love Lives On,” Carl’s lead vocals on “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Soul Searchin’,” and Carl’s shared lead with Bruce and Brian on “California Feelin’.”

The set also features a special ‘From The Vaults’ disc of rarities selected by the band and the producers with longtime Beach Boys fans in mind. Among the disc’s highlights are a cappella mixes of standout vocal recordings for songs including “This Whole World” and “Slip On Through,” alternate versions of “Don’t Worry Baby” and other Beach Boys classics, session highlights and instrumental tracks, plus newly-discovered BBC Radio live recordings from 1964 of “Wendy,” “When I Grow Up (To Be A Man),” and “Hushabye.”

The Beach Boys were one of the first bands to found its own record label with the launch of Brother Records, Inc. (BRI), with the band’s members as its shareholders and Capitol Records as its distribution partner.

The Beach Boys continue to hold Billboard / Nielsen SoundScan’s record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and they are also the American group with the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits (36). ‘Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys’ has achieved triple-Platinum sales status, and ‘The SMiLE Sessions,’ released to worldwide critical acclaim in November 2011, won a GRAMMY® Award for Best Historical Album and was heralded as the year’s Best Reissue by Rolling Stone magazine.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and recipients of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award, The Beach Boys are an American institution that is iconic around the world.

“Believing in the impossible and making it a reality is the central theme of Diamond Dreams

“I believe everything starts with an idea”, says pop artist Aiden Leslie of his latest single, Diamond Dreams. The new remixes by Klubjumpers, Tim Letteer, Julian Marsh, Joe Mancuso, The All Nighters and Mike Degen has been released to iTunes and major music retailers via ASHEA Records. The song depicts the life journey Leslie launched six days after his high school graduation. He left his sleepy hometown in Ohio for the bright lights of the big city of New York to become the music performer he is today. “When you begin to visualize what you want, then you can create a plan of action to make it real” he explains.

Believing in the impossible and making it a reality is the core theme of Diamond Dreams, however the song also reveals some of the pitfalls Leslie has encountered along the way.

“For a long time, I looked away from love or sought it from people that would never return it,” he admits. “Like so many people, I was afraid to let people in.”

In Diamond Dreams, Leslie rejoins his producer on “Trying to Leave Now”, Mike Degen. Degen encouraged Leslie to bare his soul in the record. “Sharing experiences can be powerful,” continues Leslie. “It helps me to express myself, and it may help someone else too.”

He’s excited to reach a new audience with the remixes. “I always feel remixes are the other story of a song that have yet to be told” he says. “It’s like sharing the next chapter.”

Of course, he won’t admit to having a favorite. “Every remix that I choose is there because I love it,” he says. However, he does point out that he loves the energy of the Klubjumpers club mix. “You will see me performing it live in the coming months!” he adds.

After a two-year of self-imposed hiatus from music, Aiden Leslie blasted on to the pop charts early last year with “Worlds Away”, a song about the death of his beloved sister. It climbed to the top spot on the club music retail site, Masterbeat.com. It’s music video also reached the #1 position on MTV LOGO’s “The Click List”, where it remained for four consecutive weeks.

He returned last fall with “Trying to Leave Now,” a song he wrote about a relationship he was forced to leave even though his feelings were still strong and alive.

Aiden Leslie’s diamond dreams are different today than what they were in the beginning of his journey. “Today, I dream for something bigger. I dream that I will never settle for what I know in my heart to be true, even if it means I must make hard sacrifices.”

He feels blessed and looks back fondly at the long road he has traveled since graduating high school. “In the end, all of what you do in your life makes you who you are,” he says. “Why not celebrate it and reach for the dreams that inspire you? You only have one go-around to make it happen.”

“This is the record my fans have been begging me to make” said Kristine at this morning’s announcement of the new album. “It took a lot of sweat, tears and money to put all these club gems together, but man, from the positive buzz we’ve received online, it was all well worth it.”

Many of the songs on New & Number Ones Remixes Part 1 are already dance floor approved; having been rigorously tested in front of live audiences at Kristine’s club performances. “It was cool to test the songs on fans and watch the way they caught on and spread the energy like wild fire,” she says.

According to online trend reports, Subgroover’s remix of Land of the Living is a particular standout on the album. Club fans love how the Dutch producer latched on to the phrase ‘glad to be alive’. “I began performing Subgroover’s remix of Land of the Living at different Pride events and AIDS fundraisers, and it struck me just how relevant the song’s theme is to the gay-positive community,” says Kristine. “These men and women, living with HIV and AIDS, are not only surviving today, they are thriving. Land of the Living has become something of an anthem, celebrating endurance and strength.”

“I’m also fascinated by the many ways people are connecting with Everything That I Got,” continues Kristine. Based on her own life’s story, as an independent artist navigating through a challenging music business, Everything That I Got has proven to touch people on many levels. “The song is about persevering and not giving up. It really sums up how people are feeling today in this down economy.”

The original version appears on Kristine’s pop-oriented album, New & Number Ones, released late last year. On the new album, UK remixer Bimbo Jones take the track into the peak hours with a high-energy production that encourages revelers to shower in pride with a “hey, yeah!”.

“The Bimbo Jones remix encapsulates the mood I’m trying to bring to the forefront these days,” says Kristine. “Ultimately, my hope is that my music helps lift people’s spirits and gets them moving: at the gym, in their cars and living rooms, and, of course, on the dance floor.”

Kristine W, a former beauty queen who competed in the Miss America Pageant as Miss Washington and won the swimsuit competition, as well as the talent competition with her rendition of Summertime has made significant accomplishments in her 15+ years in dance music. Most notably, she has released 16 #1 dance hits, tying Mariah Carey with the third-most chart toppers on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart. Only Madonna (with 40) and Janet (19) have scored more #1s.

Kristine also holds the world’s record for Most Consecutive #1 Billboard Club Hits. She had nine #1s in a row; Madonna and Janet Jackson trail her with seven.

She has released five pop/dance albums: Land of the Living (1996, RCA Records), Stronger (2000, RCA Records), Fly Again (2003, Tommy Boy), The Power of Music (2009, Fly Again Music) and New & Number Ones (2012, Fly Again Music).

In December, 2009, Billboard published both their Year End and Decade End charts, placing Kristine W in the third place position on the Decade’s Best of 2000s Dance Club Play Artists list, behind Madonna and Beyoncé. New & Number Ones Remixes Part 1 is available now at all major music retailers. For more visit www.KristineW.com.

by David Cohen

Country singer Steve Grand with his new music video for his single "All-American Boy" is getting the the Internet buzz he always wanted, but this time everyone labeling the musician as the first openly gay country singer.

On July 2, Grand released the video on his Facebook page saying "after all these years...this is my song. my story. my dream."

Without a manager or record label or any sort, and no money to produce a record Steve Grand used the tip money he made playing piano downtown at The Joynt, and at the churches on Sunday morning... and produce this single all by himself, all alone.. "We'll see how long I'll be singing “Glory to God” should this video see the light of day."

"Anything you can give is a huge help to me." This is the story I've been aching to tell my most of my life.

Showing off his ripped physique Steve Grand tells us his story of falling in love for his hunky friend. After sharing a bottle of whiskey, spending some intimate time together, taking of his shirt and skinny dipping, it’s clear, Grand’s character has a bad case of puppy love. The clips shows Grand and the dude finally kissing in a lake but Grand’s all-American boy just wants to be friends.

"It's time to be brave... I am taking a risk here in many ways, but really there is no choice but to be brave. To not tell this story is to let my soul die,” Steve wrote on his Facebook. “It is all I believe in. It is all I hold dear. We have all longed for someone we can never have… we all have felt that ache for our ‎#allamericanboy.”

The video touched so many fans all across the internet leaving Grand speechless. "I am so overwhelmed right now I don’t even know what to say... reading your comments and messages about how this song/video has brought back memories or tugged at something inside of you has moved me deeply."

And he is doing his best to respond to as many fans as he can. "Forgive me if I am late or miss over something since I am going at this alone," he writes. "Keep sharing the video if you are inspired. Let's let our story be known by the whole world! I cannot thank you enough for supporting me... I’ve dreamed about this all of my life."

<![CDATA[Tylan Kickstarter: "One True Thing"]]>Thu, 20 Jun 2013 17:21:46 GMThttp://pinkmag.com/20/post/2013/06/tylan-kickstarter-one-true-thing.html
by David Cohen

Tylan’s Kickstarter’s campaign for her new album One True Thing created a tremendous buzz and raised nearly $47,000 from 760 backers in 30 days. This was the second highest grossing Kickstarter campaign ever in the history of the folk/country category.

This successful Kickstarter campaign helped Tylan make her dream a reality. After five studio albums and ten years on the road (which she would preffered to do less) with the internationally and acclaimed folk-pop quartet Girlyman, Tylan is returning to her roots with her debut stunning solo CD, One True Thing due out on June 18, 2013.

For a long time Tylan wanted to create an intimate solo album that is more raw and exposed. “There’s something about the raw, lyric-driven acoustic experience that has always appealed to me. I like the idea of having very little between the song and the listener. That’s where I come from.”

Working with producer Michael Connolly, the two were able to create this stripped-down sound, using a guitar, piano, Hammond organ, upright bass, cello, and the drums of fellow Girlyman member JJ Jones. “Michael is very good at creating an orchestra with just a few instruments and leaving lots of space for the song to come through.”

The first single on her solo album, "Already Fine," is a slow-burn acoustic duet with Amy Ray from The Indigo Girls, and highlights Tylan's introspective lyrics and strong vocals. Girlyman's first CDs were released on Ray's Daemon Records label, and Tylan credits Ray for taking the band "under her wing."

One True Thing is a solid example of a chilled-out personal journey led by a singer-songwriter with a passion for verbal expression and a subtle voice which adds power to the lyrics. Tylan is definitely worth watching out for contemporary American folk music, and for a great talent as a lyrical singer and acomplished songwriter.

When it comes to sexual orientation and gender indentity, Tylan describes herself as "very, very gay. I have always been out, and I love that is becoming fashionable to be out," she says. Her sexual orientation never created a negative impact on her music career, but her gender expression and her previous band named Girlyman did.

The term "Girlyman" might fit Tylan perfectly — or not at all. She is neither particularly girly nor a man, and yet she also blends the two.
"My gender expression is pretty masculine. I generally wear a jacket and tie," she says. "I think through the years, some people thought, 'That music is not for me,' but other people — who are either queer or open-minded or heard the music first — were drawn in and realized that it doesn't matter what people look like; it's great when people look different, and not everyone has to look the same."

After a difficult year following the break-up of a 16 years relationship coupled with the decision to end Girlyman, Tylan is happy again. Living in Sonoma, CA with her girlfriend, Ingrid, who is part of her band, life couldn’t be better. They are on the road together sharing with us the one thing they love most––their music.
